Welcome to Gaeltacht Mhúscraí

Fáilte go Gaeltacht Mhúscraí.

“Mise Éire” composer Seán Ó Riada came with his family to live in Cúil Aodha in the Múscraí Gaeltacht as he was seeking to be close to the source of Irish culture and it was in nearby Baile Mhúirne that the world renowned poet Seán Ó Riordáin was born and raised.    Here too some of the most decisive engagements of the War of Independence were fought, the most notable being the Cúl na Cathrach ambush which is still being studied in military academies around the world.  It’s here some of the songs we remember from school were composed by the poets of Dáimh Scoil Mhúscraí the only bardic poetry school in Ireland, songs like “Táimse agus Máire” and “An Poc Ar Buile”.

It’s here you can enjoy the rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains, the meandering Sullane River and the tranquil splendor of Gougane.   Take a walk or a cycle along the many trails through spectacular scenery, building up an appetite for wholesome meals in local award winning restaurants and enjoy the lively seisiúin ceoil afterwards in pubs frequented by the best traditional musicians.

Today, the Irish language or Gaoluinn is still a living language in Múscraí, young people are singing the old songs and poets are writing new verses.  The torch of tradition is still alight and burning brightly.   Come and taste the ‘pure drop’ of Irish culture and history for yourself.   There will be a welcome for you in the Múscraí community from Cúil Aodha to Cill na Martra, from Baile Mhúirne to Réidh na nDoirí to Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh, home of Ireland’s first summer college, Coláiste na Mumhan.

As we say here as Gaoluinn: “Dé do bheatha go Múscraí!”
