Slí Mullach an Ois 14km

Beginning at An Muileann (The Mills), take the Kippaghs road as far as the bridge. Turn left over the bridge and after 1/2 a mile, take the second right turn (sign posted). You are then on the Mountain Road. After a further mile you reach the gates to the T.V. Station. There, you have a choice. You can continue on along the Mountain road by which you came, for a mile or two to where it skirts along the northern boundary of Gleann Daimh forest. This road eventually links up with the Macroom-Millstreet road several miles further on. It is a very pleasant road for walking, with an almost imperceptible gradient towards the east. The views are good and you can enjoy the sounds of bleating lambs and chirping larks and stonechats in the heather. Alternatively, you can go along the 2 mile long service road that snakes its way to the summit. Should you opt for this, we suggest you bring along an anorak or windcheater of some kind to wear at the top. Remember, there are sheep and lambs along the way.

Furthermore, the landowners take no responsibility for injuries, so be careful, especially, when negotiating cattle grids that straddle the road here and there. Allowing for “breathers” and sightseeing pauses along the way, the ascent should take about 1 hour. At the summit there are magnificent panoramic views all around. At the top, you are 2133 feet above sea level, while the mast towers a further 550 feet above you. You have elevated yourself by about 1700 feet since leaving Baile Bhúirne. The descent should take only 30-35 minutes. The downward journey does, however, put a certain strain on the sartorii. The what? you ask” ” you’ll know when you get to the bottom. By the way, the Station yard and buildings are “out of bounds” Those with respiratory or circulatory problems are advised NOT to attempt the walk to the summit.
